Mary CollinsMary Collins Charter School at Cherry Valley: School Plan for Student Achievement (2026-27)
Mary Collins Charter School at Cherry Valley SPSAEach year, our School Site Council, made up of parents and staff, reviews our data and sets goals for the year ahead. Here are the highlights of our plan for this school year.
Academic growth for every student: We aim to bring math results up to the state standard and keep raising English language arts results, with extra focus on students from low-income families. Teachers will work through a cycle of inquiry each semester to sharpen their teaching. More K-5 teachers will join the California Reading and Literature Project and the SCOE Literacy Fellowship. Staff will also map how reading skills build from grade to grade. Middle schoolers will take on community service projects and use office hours to practice self-advocacy.
A trusted adult for every student: We want more students, especially in 4th and 7th grade, to say there's an adult at school they can talk to when they're stressed or upset. Classrooms use Second Step and other social-emotional lessons, class circles, and restorative practices, and class meetings help students name their trusted adults. Yard staff will be trained in positive behavior support, and recess will include organized games with shared rules for solving conflicts. Alumni lunches keep former students connected to their teachers.
Students with disabilities: We aim to substantially raise reading and math results for students with disabilities. Students will practice with their IEP testing accommodations, and middle schoolers will learn to advocate for them with their teachers. A Learning Team meets weekly to review student progress. Teachers and specialists will review every IEP and 504 plan together twice a year. We're also adding intervention materials, such as decodable readers, and training our resource specialists in math instruction.
Attendance: We aim to bring chronic absenteeism from 13.7% to below 10%. Classrooms will use calm-down spaces, movement breaks, and taught routines to help students feel ready to learn. A team will review attendance data every quarter. Families will get attendance information at Back to School Night and in the newsletter. Twice a week, students who find recess difficult, including those navigating friendships or anxiety, can choose an alternative to recess or join a small support group.
The School Site Council approved the plan on April 29, 2026, and the Board of Education approved it on May 12, 2026.
