Citizenship and ESL

Thank you for your interest in free classes at Petaluma Adult School.

Fall ESL classes will be August 24 - December 10, 2026.

 

Registration will be at McDowell School in Room B3:

  • Tuesday, August 18, from 9 am - 2 pm and 5:30-7:00 pm
  • Wednesday, August 19, from 9 am - 2 pm
  • Thursday, August 20, from 9 am - 2 pm  and 5:30-7:00 pm

FINAL Registration:

  • Mondays, August 24 and August 31, 12-1 pm and 6-7 pm (in center of B building)

At registration, students will take the CASAS test of English (about 1 hour).

Day Class Schedule:

Monday to Thursday (4 days a week) at McDowell School:

  • 9:00 - 11:45 am (Beginner and Intermediate classes)
  • 12:30 - 2:30 pm (Level 1 class only. No child care for this class.)

 

Evening Class Schedule:

Tuesdays and Thursdays (2 classes a week) at McDowell School:
6:00 - 8:30 pm (Beginner & Intermediate classes)

Classes, parking and child care are FREE. You can purchase books for $20 if you wish.

Citizenship Preparation in English

Citizenship Preparation will be September 16 - December 2. Our class is on Wednesday evenings, 6:30-8:30 pm, at McDowell School. Free parking and free child care are available. 

This class is designed for people who speak, read and write in English and are ready to apply for naturalization. To apply, you need to have had a green card for at least 5 years (or a minimum of 3 years if you are married to a U.S. citizen).  Please contact our community partners IIBA in Petaluma or California Human Development in Santa Rosa to get FREE help completing the N-400 application for U.S. citizenship. Only students who have submitted their application will be able to register for our Citizenship Preparation course. Currently, people who apply must wait 12 months to get an interview, so you will have time to study and prepare. 

Please note, to do the citizenship interview in your native language, you must:

  • Be 50-54 years old and have had a green card for 20 years or more, OR
  • Be 55 or older and have had a green card for 15 years or more, AND
  • Bring a qualified interpreter to your interview.

Para hacer la entrevista de ciudadanía en su idioma nativo, deberá:

  • Tener entre 50 y 54 años Y haber tenido la mica durante 20 años o más, O
  • Tener 55 años o más Y haber tenido la mica por 15 años o más, Y
  • Traer un(a) intérprete calificado/a
