School Climate & Safety

At PCS, we create an environment where every student feels safe, respected, and ready to learn. We teach and recognize positive behavior, help students repair harm after conflicts, and plan carefully for emergencies.

School Safety

The safety of every student and staff member is our top priority. Each year, our school updates a comprehensive safety plan that covers emergencies and potential threats. Our School Site Council, made up of administrators, teachers, staff, parents, and community members, reviews and approves the plan every year.

Students and staff practice emergency procedures throughout the year, including fire, earthquake, lockdown, and evacuation drills, so everyone knows what to do.

Positive Behavior (PBIS)

PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) helps prevent behavior problems before they start. We believe every student can succeed when expectations are clear, and support is consistent.

  • Clear expectations: We teach students what positive behavior looks like in every part of the school, from the classroom to the playground and cafeteria. Each school has a unique set of schoolwide expectations.
  • Recognition: Staff notice and celebrate students who meet expectations through praise, acknowledgment, and rewards.
  • Support for every student: All students receive schoolwide support. Students who need more help get additional, more personalized support.
  • Tracking progress: We review behavior data regularly to see what's working and adjust our approach.

Restorative Practices

When conflicts or harm happen, Restorative Practices help students take responsibility, understand how their actions affected others, and repair relationships. The approach is built on respect, responsibility, and strong relationships.

  • Restorative circles: A trained facilitator guides the students involved through a structured conversation. Each person shares their perspective, and together they agree on how to make things right.
  • Restorative conferences: A more formal meeting for more serious situations, which may include parents, teachers, and administrators.
  • Repairing harm: Rather than relying only on traditional punishment, we focus on helping students repair the harm they caused, with consequences when appropriate.
