  Reports & Presentations

  • Mary Collins Charter School at Cherry Valley presented a site report outlining important improvements in math and language arts, instructional focuses around shared learning amongst students and a school strength of belonging and school culture. 
  • Trustees recognized the following students of the month: Alexa Arenas Vasquez - Kenilworth Junior High School, Lucy Diles - Petaluma Junior High School, Janice Garcia - Carpe Diem High School, Moises Garcia Arango - Casa Grande High School, Audrey Atiyeh - Petaluma High School
  • The PCS mental health team presented on current school-based mental health programs, as well as a new partnership with Sonoma County’s CAPE program to provide additional school-based mental health services
  • Safe Routes to School presented on previous and current work they are doing to improve safety in and around school sites, as well as ways for schools to continue to partner with their organization 

  Action Items

  • The board passes Resolution 2627-09 recognizing the month of November as Native American Heritage Month
  • The design build entity for McDowell Dual Language Immersion Project was approved which places the project on track to break ground on new buildings in 2027
  • The contractor selection for electrical upgrades at McDowell Elementary, McNear Elementary and Valley VIsta Public Waldorf was approved 
  • New members to the Citizen’s Bond Oversight Committee were approved

  Discussion

  • Kirsten Grimm, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services provided an update on recent achievement scores from the California Dashboard including the celebration of a blue rating (highest possible score) for college and career readiness amongst PCS students

  October 6, 2026 - Regular Board Meeting

  Reports & Presentations

  • Grant Elementary presented a site report outlining important improvements to school culture, successes and challenges in instructional focus areas and a sneak preview of their upcoming musical “Annie”.

  Action Items

  • The board passes Resolution 2627-06 prohibiting wireless cell towers on District property. An updated version of board policy 3280 will be brought to the next meeting to reflect the changes outlined in the resolution
  • The board approved the design build entity selection for Valley Vista Public Waldorf’s transitional kindergarten project 

  Discussion

  • The board directed staff to move kindergarten and first grade classrooms away from one to one devices and to shared ipad carts. Students will not be assigned individual devices in K-1. Discussion centered around purposeful use of technology.
  • The board directed staff to refresh the aging devices in second through sixth grade with chromebooks instead of ipads based on teacher, student, and family feedback.
  • 7th-8th grade will have a chromebook refresh and every student will continue to be assigned an individual device.
  • The board directed staff to begin plans for the phase out of our district’s current policy of allowing students to bring their own computer device at high schools beginning in the 2027-28 school year.

  September 15, 2026 - Regular Board Meeting

  Reports & Presentations

  • The Petaluma Adult School presented a site report detailing their progress in helping students pass the HiSet exam, gain citizenship, learn English and participate in parenting classes
  • The board recognized the following students as September students of the month: Joaquin Raya - Kenilworth Junior High School, Calvin Jackson - Petaluma Junior High School, Delano Salazar - Casa Grande High School, Aimen Malik - Petaluma High School, Oliver Nakmine Hamilton - San Antonio High School
  • The Chief Business Official presented the 2025-26 Unaudited Actuals, detailing the district's financial recovery over the past year.
  • The Board reviewed the district's AI guidance framework, including the grade-span approach to AI use.
  • The Board discussed updates to public comment procedures to improve community engagement which would include moving all public comment to the beginning of the meeting

  Action Items

  • Hearing held for sufficiency of textbooks and materials and corresponding resolutions 2627-07 and 2627-08 were approved
  • Approved the 2025-26 Unaudited Actuals
  • Adopted Resolution 2627-05 establishing the district's annual GAN borrowing limit
  • Approved Board Policy 5141.5 on student mental health supports with an amendment to ensure at least 40% of classified employees can receive youth behavioral health training

  Discussion Items

  • The board discussed Resolution 2627-06 which would prohibit the future installation of wireless cell towers on district property. This item will be brought back to the next board agenda.

  Action Items

  • Adopted Resolution 2627-01 proclaiming Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15, 2026) and School Administrator Week (October 12-18, 2026)
  • Approved $360,000 in capital facility contracts, including track leveling and goalpost work at Petaluma High School and speaker installations at Casa Grande High School
  • Approved the first amendment to the agreement with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma-Marin, establishing them as the sole provider for before and after school care

  Reports & Presentations

  • Human Resources presented a strategy to strengthen and diversify the educator workforce, including expanded recruitment partnerships, job fairs beyond Sonoma County, and a career pipeline for students in the CASA careers in education pathway
  • The district provided an enrollment update showing stable enrollment over the past decade, as well a 1% increase in enrollment for the 2026-2027 school year. 
  • The Board conducted a first reading of Board Policy 5141.5 on student mental health supports, including new annual training requirements for staff serving grades 7-12
  • Board members confirmed their committee assignments for the 2026-2027 school year

  Reports & Presentations

  • Student Services provided an update on the Mobile Communication Device Policy and the roll out of the bell to bell mobile communication device ban at all PCS sites
  • The business department provided a presentation on proposition 28 funding within PCS

  The following students were sworn in as the 2026-2027 Student Board Members:

  • Ana Maria Miranda- Petaluma High School
  • Chloe Herdman- Casa Grande High School 
  • Sabrina Carte- Alternative High Schools

  In addition, Maddy Seller will serve as an alternate board member for the 2025-2026 school year.
