Food Services

Welcome to the heart of our district’s school food program - the PCS Food Services Department! Our team of dedicated food and nutrition professionals works hard every day to provide balanced, nutritious meals that nourish young minds and bodies and fuel academic success and lifelong health. All students are invited to eat for free every day and every meal is prepared with care and consideration.

Breakfast and lunch is FREE for all PCS students during the 2024-25 school year! No application is required.

Mission

Our mission is simple yet crucial: to fuel our students’ minds and bodies with delicious, nutritious meals that promote health and learning.

We believe that healthy eating habits start early, which is why we are committed to fostering a positive food environment where students can explore, learn, and develop lifelong skills for making nutritious choices. Our cafeterias aren't just a place to eat - they’re a place to grow, connect, and thrive.

Vision

Our vision is to cultivate a school food program that serves as a model of equity, dignity, and health, where every student has access to nourishing meals, every food service worker is valued and empowered, and every meal is an opportunity for learning and connection. Through collaborative partnerships, innovative initiatives, and a commitment to ethical sourcing, environmental stewardship, and supporting local farmers and food producers, we aspire to create a school food ecosystem that not only nurtures bodies and minds, but also contributes to the creation of a more just and sustainable food system and cultivates a deep appreciation for the transformative power of food in our lives and communities.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Petaluma City Schools (PCS) operates as a School Food Authority (SFA) under the California Universal Meals program.  Therefore, all students enrolled in a PCS school are entitled to receive one free breakfast and one free lunch each school day regardless of their eligibility status throughout the 2024 – 205 school year.

In addition, we are pleased to inform you that our school district is participating in a special provision under the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) called Provision 2.

What Does This Mean for You?

  • No Meal Applications Required: Provision 2 eliminates the requirement for collecting meal applications to determine meal benefit eligibility.  Therefore, starting this upcoming school year, parents and guardians will not need to complete a meal application for their student to receive free or reduced price meals. Meal applications will not be distributed or collected at any PCS school site or required at any point throughout the 2024-2025 school year should circumstances change for your family (e.g. unemployment, loss of income).
  • Universal Access: Every student enrolled in our district will automatically receive a free breakfast and a free lunch every school day.
  • Continued Support: This initiative supports our ongoing commitment to nurturing the health and well-being of our students by ensuring that no child goes hungry.

Why This Matters

Your children will be able to participate in our district breakfast and lunch programs without having to pay a fee or submit a meal application. Our hope is that eliminating the need for meal applications and offering free meals to all students minimizes barriers to food access and ensures that every child has the opportunity to thrive in school.  We are committed to serving our students and families with the best possible resources, and we believe that these programs represent an important step in that direction.

Should you have any questions or require further information, please do not hesitate to contact the Food Service team at (707) 200-7938 or email us at pcsfood@petk12.orgWe are here to help and ensure that your child’s nutritional needs are met.

Sincerely,

Brian Dufour, NDTR, MPH

  • Earned Income Tax Information Act Communication

Below is the specific language that LEAs must include when notifying households about the EITC. This language is in RTC Section 19854:

    Federal

Based on your annual earnings, you may be eligible to receive the Earned Income Tax Credit from the Federal Government (Federal EITC). The Federal EITC is a refundable federal income tax credit for low-income working individuals and families. The Federal EITC has no effect on certain welfare benefits. In most cases, Federal EITC payments will not be used to determine eligibility for Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income, food stamps, low-income housing, or most Temporary Assistance For Needy Families payments. Even if you do not owe federal taxes, you must file a federal tax return to receive the Federal EITC. Be sure to fill out the Federal EITC form in the Federal Income Tax Return Booklet. For information regarding your eligibility to receive the Federal EITC, including information on how to obtain the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Notice 797 or any other necessary forms and instructions, contact the IRS by calling 1-800-829-3676 or through its website by clicking the link below.

You may also be eligible to receive the California Earned Income Tax Credit (California EITC) starting with the calendar year 2015 tax year. The California EITC is a refundable state income tax credit for low-income working individuals and families. The California EITC is treated in the same manner as the Federal EITC and generally will not be used to determine eligibility for welfare benefits under California law. To claim the California EITC, even if you do not owe California taxes, you must file a California income tax return and complete and attach the California EITC Form (FTB 3514).
